Little Lake Free School

I haven't looked through this site completely, but I think it has some good thoughts from the small part I did glance at.

  1. I particularly liked the section on the Role of Adults:

    "Role of Adults

    • Adults help students establish their learning goals.

    • Adults are consistent with children.

    • Adults are self-aware and pay attention to their own expectations and biases.

    • Adults are facilitators and resource providers.

    • Adults teach in a non-authoritarian way and act as coaches, guides, counselors and mentors.

    • Adults model real jobs, passions and skills for students.

    • Adults incorporate physical, artistic, musical, scientific and other learning modalities in their teaching.

    • Adults take care of one another as educators, parents and colleagues."

This is a great list of attributes for a parent, teacher, family friend, random acquaintance, child-care worker, or anyone else who comes into contact with a child. This school sounds like it has a better chance for success than other democratic schools that follow the Sudbury model. In this school, there is more evidence of adult participation in student learning with much less of a cloud of secrecy overhanging all.

Good find, Tess! Thanks for sharing!
